We also want to take you on a journey to something strange, personal and beautiful.

Lempikuoro’s Lintukoto (Bird Haven) was born from the idea of bringing forth a nature-themed, dramatic concert. Themes such as nature loss, the relationship between humans and nature and the diversity of nature ultimately led us to birds. Music inspired by nature through our winged friends and different perspectives on nature came together naturally. It is also fun to think how spring’s migratory birds bring songs in different languages to everyone here in Maunula.

Birds have inspired composers and poets throughout the ages. National romantic composer Leevi Madetoja’s Kevätunta (Spring Slumber) and Wilhelm Peterson-Berger’s I furuskogen (In the Pine Forest) offer us an innocent view of pure, untouched nature – the ideal of nature. Renaissance composer Clément Janequin’s Le chant des Oiseaux (The Song of the Birds) is a humorous romp that compares the spring songs of birds to human love affairs.

A more contemplative style is represented by wordless songs: Olli Kortekangas’s Meditation and Bo Holten’s arrangement Emigrantvisa (Emigrant Song). Along with them, Anders Hillborg’s En midsommarnattsdröm (A Midsummer Night’s Dream), which conjures up the foggy atmosphere of a summer night pond, and Goda Marija Gužauskaitė’s Geguté sode (The Cuckoo in the Garden): a wistful arrangement of a Lithuanian folk tune, offer a more mystical tone.

Teemu Tommola’s Punatulkkumetsä (The Bull-finch Forest) and Mia Makaroff’s Armottoman osa (The Part of the Pitiless) give voice to our grief about disappearing nature and birds losing their homes. Meredith Monk’s Panda Chant II acts as a ritual or a cry for help to stop this loss.

Antti Suomalainen’s premiere piece Rakkaani, metsä (My Beloved, Forest) reaches out towards the forest, home for both birds and us humans. A bird’s home is finally found with Caroline Shaw’s beautiful work and the swallow, although it is up to the listener to interpret whether it is about finding a place of refuge, a journey to the afterlife, or a home that can only be reached in dreams.

The focus of the dramaturgical work was during the spring with the help of a community-based drama group assembled from the choir. Already at the first meeting in the Viikki arboretum, it became clear that we would build our story from small streams: perspectives and moods from which an organic whole would grow. We asked the choir members for stories about birds, leaving and home. We collected 52 personal stories and from them we formed the heart of the dramaturgy.

The choir has bravely jumped into theatre shoes during a tight rehearsal period. We set the drama’s frame as ”From Maunula to the mythological”, where we move from the local and concrete like migratory birds towards conceptually stranger perspectives on nature.

During the rehearsals, we have seen the choir members joyfully throw themselves into taking over the stage and the blossoming of a new kind of expression. The choir is an ecosystem of its own and it has been a pleasure to see what kind of flowers this kind of soil has brought out in our choir!

Paavo Rinkkala, dramaturg
Julia Lainema, artistic director

Lempikuoro

Photo: Pyry Kantonen

Lempikuoro is a Helsinki-based mixed choir founded by experienced singers in autumn 2019, with Julia Lainema as their artistic director. At the heart of this ambitious choir is the joy of making music, a curious exploration of new ways of performing and a warm sense of community. Lempikuoro wants to promote equality in the choral world. The choir strives to create a culture and atmosphere both within its own community and at choir events that is comfortable and safe to be in.

The choir’s repertoire ranges from the Renaissance to contemporary music, and the choir has collaborated open-mindedly with various choirs, artists and composers. In June 2023, Lempikuoro was awarded two gold stamps at the esteemed Tampereen Sävel festival. In September of the same year, the choir gave the Finnish premiere of Pulitzer and Grammy Award winner Caroline Shaw’s work “To the Hands” at the House of Lords with the string ensemble Nome. In 2022, Lempikuoro performed in the famous opera Sun & Sea, which won the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale and was organised as part of Kiasma’s ARS22 exhibition and the Helsinki Festival.

In 2024, Lempikuoro celebrated its 5th anniversary, during which the choir performed at the traditional evening concert of the Finnish Choir Conductors’ Association’s winter days, performed a maritime-themed program in both the Helsinki and Turku archipelagos, and organised an anniversary concert. Lempikuoro was selected as the Finnish National Library’s 2025 Cultural Partner and performed at the Night of the Arts in the National Library’s Dome Hall. In September 2025, the choir participated in the prestigious and high-level International Baltic Sea Choir Competition in Jūrmala, Latvia.

JULIA LAINEMA

Photo: Majo Kurki

Julia Lainema, the artistic director of Lempikuoro, is one of the most interesting choir directors of her generation. The text describes an old, natural forest, which is called back to this moment and, more broadly, to be part of the future forest landscape. The disappearance of our diverse and old forests is evidenced, among other things, by the highly endangered common tit, which is still described as the foundation of our forests in the bird book Birds of Finland (1990). The forest management methods based on clear-cutting has had a strong impact on the endangered status of the common tit.

The composition is built around three musical ideas. Human longing for connection with nature is expressed in soaring chords that lift us to new heights. The sound of the forest is based on an acoustic scale, in which the leading note transforms into a consonant supporter of natural harmony. Towards the end, the ideas come together in layers and, like mycelium, form a foundation in which humans are part of natural harmony.

Through naming and knowledge creation, humans can gain a deeper understanding of the diversity and life-sustaining processes of nature. When bending down to examine a tiny speck of moss with a magnifying glass or hearing a bird song in the forest, we learn to ask: What are you? Are you alive or in danger of disappearing forever? I was about 10 years old and had gone to Viikki after school one afternoon to spot birds, as usual. One of the bird towers was incredibly crowded; I’d never seen such a crush of people there. An older birder told me that there was a Black-winged Stilt there, the first time it had ever been seen in Finland. He let me look at the bird through his spotting scope. It looked a bit like an Oystercatcher. That evening, the bird was on the TV news, and I felt proud that I happened to be in exactly the right place.

The Peacock
I moved to Herttoniemi from Northern Finland. The first time I encountered a pheasant, I called the Korkeasaari Zoo and said, ”One of your female peacocks must have escaped, because it’s screaming in our yard.” Well, they replied that all their peacocks were accounted for and asked if it might be a pheasant. After arguing for a while that it definitely wasn’t a pheasant, I Googled it and realized that, well, it actually was a pheasant. I had to get used to them because they were constantly in our housing company’s parking lot, screaming.

The Wood Grouse
I was coming home from school in the sixth grade. We had quite recently moved into an old detached house, and from the living room window, on could only see the tops of apple trees. When I looked out the window, I saw a large bird sitting picturesquely in the fork of a branch. This had to be captured! I scrambled to find the digital camera, but I couldn’t find it. I dialed my mom’s work number and wailed into the kitchen phone: ”Where is our camera just when I need it? There’s a wood grouse sitting in our apple tree!” I was so annoyed that my mom didn’t grasp the urgency of the situation—and then she even started to laugh. The bird managed to fly away, and to top it off, my mom doubted my identification. After all that passion, it was hard to admit that it might have actually been a pheasant.

The Pondering Magpie
Often, when I’m pondering a work matter, my gaze drifts to the window, to the swaying birches, and lands on a magpie. He looks (probably not) at me and I look at him, greeting him in my thoughts. Whenever this happens, this magpie is a lucky friend to me. I often get a good idea or my thoughts fall into place while I’m watching the magpie. When the magpie flies off again, the thinking is done, and I get back to work.

♫ Leevi Madetoja: Kevätunta (1925) // Spring Slumber
Text by L. There are now 86 endangered bird species on the list. In addition, 34 species are ”near threatened”—meaning they aren’t endangered yet, but almost. One has already disappeared entirely: the Yellow-breasted Bunting was last seen in 2007.

Endangerment increases as bird habitats vanish. Too many old-growth forests have been logged, and managed forests do not contain enough decaying wood. Agricultural environments have become more uniform as production has been streamlined and cattle grazing has decreased. Too many lakes, sea bays, and estuaries have become eutrophicated. Too many mires have been drained.

Pheasants
In my childhood, many pheasants were seen in our yard.
