\u201dI know thee not, thou knowest me not\u201d, states Eino Leino in his poem Skulls. Yet \u201dall are alike\u201d. The pieces in this concert reflect on various aspects of human life: the horrors of war, faith, despe\u00adrate acts. The produc\u00adtion of this concert has been a unique oppor\u00adtu\u00adnity to work exclusi\u00advely with newly-composed works. Furt\u00adher\u00admore, it is a notable and rare thing that all but one of the compo\u00adsers also sing in the choir. We hope you have a memo\u00adrable concert \u2013 it is time to bring this brand new choral music to life!

Julia Lainema graduated with a Master of Music degree in Choral Conduc\u00adting from the Sibe\u00adlius Academy in the of summer 2022, having previously completed a Master of Music degree in Music Educa\u00adtion. In addi\u00adtion to Lempi\u00adkuoro, Julia is the artistic director of Ahjo Ensemble, Kaari Ensemble and, from spring 2023, the N\u00e4s Chamber Choir. She arranges and composes choral music and has orga\u00adnised various choral music events. Julia is a member of the Committee for Equal Oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adties of the Finnish Choral Direc\u00adtors Associa\u00adtion and writes a blog on choral music called \u201dWomen compo\u00adsers in choral music\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lempikuoro<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Lempi\u00adkuoro is a Helsinki-based mixed choir founded by profes\u00adsional and expe\u00adrienced singers in autumn 2019. In Lempi, high-class singing meets the joy of making music and explo\u00adring new perfor\u00admance methods together. The choir\u2019s reper\u00adtoire is based on a wide range of clas\u00adsical choral music from the Renais\u00adsance to the present day. In August 2022, Lempi\u00adkuoro performed in the highly acclaimed Sun & Sea opera produc\u00adtion, which was part of Kiasma\u2019s ARS22 exhi\u00adbi\u00adtion and the Helsinki Festival. The choir was among the first choirs to hold its own live\u00adstream concert during the strict pandemic restric\u00adtions in autumn 2020 and also performed with pop singer Janne Masalin in autumn 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hailing from L\u00e4nsi-Vantaa, Leo Niemi began his musical journey at Martin\u00adlaakso elemen\u00adtary school playing Metal\u00adlica on bass. His inte\u00adrest in music led him from Vaski\u00advuori high school to the Helsinki Pop & Jazz Conser\u00adva\u00adtory and even further to the Univer\u00adsity of Helsinki\u2019s Musico\u00adlogy Depart\u00adment where Niemi\u2019s curio\u00adsity for music found a home.

Curio\u00adsity is a hall\u00admark of Niemi\u2019s music. For example, his rap alter ego Leokoira released H\u00e4slinki EP in early 2022, combi\u00adning hip-hop, jazz and metal in a way that had never been heard before.

BLOSIS is another leap into the unknown. Composed in 2017 and released on Spotify, the transcen\u00addental sound artwork reaches the edges of the human voice, explo\u00adring what kind of tones and colours the human voice can actually produce.

Blosis is Helsinki slang for \u201cwind\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Doomed Earth is inspired by end-of-the-world cynicism that runs rampant online. This pheno\u00admenon irri\u00adtates the composer because of its often weak and misrepre\u00adsented scien\u00adtific reaso\u00adning, but which in itself provides a solid emotional basis for compo\u00adsi\u00adtion. Doomsday and its defi\u00adni\u00adtions are also used as powerful instru\u00adments of discourse in diffe\u00adrent socie\u00adties. Perhaps this piece will at least provoke discus\u00adsion of such power at the coffee table.

Jouko Kelo\u00adm\u00e4ki studied mathe\u00adma\u00adtics at the Univer\u00adsity of Helsinki with mediocre grades under various teac\u00adhers, lectu\u00adrers and profes\u00adsors. The degree proved to be too tough a feat though, and they never graduated. A career as a teacher did not suit emotional Jouko either, so they ended up switc\u00adhing to program\u00adming and consul\u00adtancy. This seemingly resulted in newfound self-confi\u00addence, which they have leve\u00adraged in compo\u00adsing this piece for Lempikuoro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The energy released from the impact of an aste\u00adroid or comet with a diameter of five to ten kilo\u00adme\u00adters or larger is sufficient to create a global envi\u00adron\u00admental disaster.

An example of the devas\u00adta\u00adting effects is a cloud of fine dust ejecta blan\u00adke\u00adting the planet partially bloc\u00adking direct sunlight from reac\u00adhing the Earth\u2019s surface thus lowe\u00adring land tempe\u00adra\u00adtures by about 15 degrees Celsius, halting photo\u00adsynt\u00adhesis.

As an expert assessed: It\u2019s a hundred percent certain Earth will be hit by a devas\u00adta\u00adting aste\u00adroid, but we\u2019re just not sure when.

Doomed Earth, Doomed Earth

The Sun\u2019s lumi\u00adno\u00adsity has increased by a percent every hundred and ten million years. Once the solar lumi\u00adno\u00adsity is ten percent higher than its current value, the planet\u2019s climate changes.

The average global surface tempe\u00adra\u00adture will rise to 47 degrees Celsius. The atmosp\u00adhere will become a \u201cmoist green\u00adhouse\u201d leading to a runaway evapo\u00adra\u00adtion of the oceans.

Water molecules in the stra\u00adtosp\u00adhere will be broken by solar UV allowing hydrogen to escape the atmosp\u00adhere.

Water will slowly escape out to space

The result will be a loss of the world\u2019s seawater by about 1.1 billion years from the present.

In octo\u00addecil\u00adlion years is the abso\u00adlute end. The laws of physics state: entropy must increase. When maximum entropy is reached, heat death occurs (heat death occurs): no more move\u00adment, no energy, nothing.

I am a composer-arranger specia\u00adli\u00adsing in vocal music, with strong influences from jazz, folk music and tradi\u00adtional art music. Songs of Perse\u00adve\u00adrance is a series of songs based on ex-priest Kai Sadinmaa\u2019s book Tinki\u00adm\u00e4t\u00f6n kuole\u00admaan saakka (Bazar 2022) \u2013 partly auto\u00adbio\u00adgrap\u00adhical, partly about the fate of the famous Finnish conscien\u00adtious objector Arndt Peku\u00adrinen. For lyrics I have used both excerpts from Sadinmaa\u2019s book and other thema\u00adtically similar texts. Two parts of the series will be performed by Lempikuoro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first version of Skulls was composed in March 2022 in reac\u00adtion to Russia\u2019s inva\u00adsion of Ukraine, and the final version was completed in August. Set to a poem by Eino Leino, the work explores anti-war senti\u00adment by asking the simple ques\u00adtion: \u201cWhy do we wage war?\u201d. In this poem, skulls fall into the mud as time puts the sense\u00adless\u00adness of violence into pers\u00adpec\u00adtive \u2013 in the end, no one remem\u00adbers why or against whom the war was fought.

Lassi Vihko is a composer and sound designer working mostly in the gaming industry. In addi\u00adtion to his work, Vihko enjoys making music in his spare time, both in Lempi\u00adkuoro and at home at his piano. Skulls is the first work Vihko has composed for a mixed choir.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The idea for the piece was first born after reading about the Tatta\u00adrisuo case in Perttu H\u00e4kkinen and Vesa Iitti\u2019s book Valon\u00adkan\u00adtajat (The Bearers of Light). The case is mainly known for its grue\u00adsome occul\u00adtist rituals using body parts of the dead, which Finnish media quickly realised was the story of the century. However, the book also desc\u00adribes a more human side of the case, presen\u00adting the perpet\u00adra\u00adtors as social outcasts, despe\u00adrate to use magic to seek \u201cjustice in a society where it was not given to their kind\u201d.

This cont\u00adra\u00addic\u00adtion serves as the basis for the first two parts of the work, the texts of which are excerpts from police mate\u00adrial at the time. The first part is based on the \u2019Mass of Tatta\u00adrisuo\u2019, which desc\u00adribes the pursuit of eternal happi\u00adness and the overco\u00adming of injus\u00adtice in the name of Fenetzar, the concocted god of glory. The second part of the text is based on a vision of Ida Widen (one of the key figures in the case), which ulti\u00adma\u00adtely led to the use of body parts in the occul\u00adtist acts.

The media atten\u00adtion given to the Tatta\u00adrisuo case was quite excep\u00adtional in the 1930s. The scoop remained on the front pages of the major news\u00adpa\u00adpers for weeks, regard\u00adless of whether there was anyt\u00adhing new to tell. The third part of the work builds around texts compiled from these head\u00adlines and news items. The specu\u00adla\u00adtion on the front page about the culprit provides an inte\u00adres\u00adting point of refe\u00adrence for the pheno\u00admenon that thrives still today, particu\u00adlarly on social media, where myste\u00adries are solved by the public, often with very ques\u00adtio\u00adnable results.

The text of the fourth part is based on an opinion piece written by Urho Karhun\u00adm\u00e4ki for Helsingin Sanomat, in which he reflects on the signi\u00adficance of the sensa\u00adtion created by the whole case. Decades later, his ideas on the signi\u00adficance of media sensa\u00adtio\u00adna\u00adlism still seem rele\u00advant.

In addi\u00adtion to the book, I used Pyry Waltari\u2019s and Jaakko Ylikotila\u2019s doctoral theses in my research, especially for the correct timing of news\u00adpaper stories.
